Sports Vinyl Flooring Malaysia
Point-elastic sports vinyl engineered for badminton, gymnasium, multipurpose halls and dance studios. EN 14904 compliant. BWF-approved ranges for competition-level badminton (Taraflex Surface 7.0). The dominant specification for Malaysian sports facilities.
Definition
Sports vinyl is a multi-layer vinyl sheet engineered for athletic performance: shock-absorbing foam underlayer, structural layer, performance wear surface. Tested to EN 14904 for shock absorption (force reduction), vertical deformation, ball rebound and surface friction.
How it’s made
Closed-cell foam underlayer bonded to a heterogeneous vinyl wear sheet. The foam delivers controlled shock absorption (typically 25–55% force reduction); the wear layer delivers grip + ball-rebound performance.
Performance characteristics
| Parameter | Minimum | Premium | Standard reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Force reduction (shock absorption) | 25% | 40–55% | EN 14904 |
| Vertical deformation | ≤ 5 mm | ≤ 3 mm | EN 14904 |
| Ball rebound (basketball) | ≥ 90% | ≥ 95% | EN 14904 |
| Surface friction | 0.4–0.6 | 0.4–0.6 | EN 14904 |
| Total thickness | 4.5 mm | 7.0–9.0 mm | Manufacturer datasheet |
| BWF approval | BWF Level 3 | BWF Level 1 | BWF |

Advantages
- BWF Level 1 approved ranges available (Taraflex Surface 6.7 / 7.0)
- Multi-sport capable, one floor for badminton, basketball, futsal, volleyball
- Excellent shock absorption protects athletes’ joints
- Heat-weldable for hygienic finish
- Line marking embedded under wear surface
- Acoustic-backed variants for sports halls above occupied space
Honest trade-offs
- Higher cost than commercial heterogeneous (RM 22–55/sqft supply-and-install)
- Compressible, not appropriate under fixed heavy point-loads
- Specific to sports use, do not specify in non-sports areas
- Subfloor must be exceptionally flat (SR1 or better)

Frequently asked questions
- BWF Level 1 is for international competition (Olympic, BWF World Tour). Level 2 is for national-level competition. Level 3 is for recreational and training. Most Malaysian commercial badminton facilities specify Level 1 (Taraflex Surface 6.7 or 7.0).
- Sports vinyl handles foot traffic and dropped equipment well. For heavy free-weight stations (deadlift platforms), add rubber drop pads over the vinyl. For fixed weight machines, place protective mats under the machine footprint.
