Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions from Malaysian specifiers, grouped by topic. For specific project questions, contact our specifier desk.
Products & Specification
- Seven product types: homogeneous vinyl (healthcare/clean room), heterogeneous vinyl (office/hotel/retail/education), safety / anti-slip vinyl (wet areas/kitchens), ESD / conductive vinyl (data centre/OT), sports vinyl (badminton/gymnasium), acoustic vinyl (multi-storey buildings), and hygienic wall protection (hospital cladding, crash rails).
- Seven principal brands in ex-stock inventory: Tarkett, Gerflor, LG Hausys (LX Hausys), Polyflor, Altro, Sangetsu, Armstrong. We are not the authorised Malaysian distributor for any of them. We bulk-purchased one-time direct from factory and hold the inventory in Malaysian warehouses. Stock is finite, first-come-first-served on the ranges we hold. For new 2026/2027 collections or warranty-attached supply, source through the brand's authorised channel.
- Both. Supply-only for trade clients and contractors. Supply-and-install for end clients, installation by specialist crews with relevant SCORE rating.
- Homogeneous is a single-layer construction where colour and pattern run the full thickness, sandable, refurbishable, the standard for hospitals and clean rooms. Heterogeneous is multi-layer with a printed decor protected by a transparent wear layer, wider design range, used in offices, retail, hotels, education.
- Sheet vinyl is a continuous roll with few welded seams. LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) and SPC (Stone Polymer Composite) are click-lock or glue-down planks/tiles with joints at every plank edge. Sheet wins for clinical, sports and large continuous areas. LVT/SPC wins where plank aesthetic is required.
Compliance & Standards
- BOMBA reviews the building’s overall fire safety package, which includes floor coverings. The flooring product needs the right fire test certification (BS 476 Part 7 Class 1 OR EN 13501-1 Bfl-s1). Submit the manufacturer’s test certificate with the BOMBA submission. We provide certificate copies for all our ranges.
- Most of our principal ranges are SIRIM-verified or carry equivalent certification accepted by JKR. We provide certification documentation per range on request.
- Yes, most of our ranges are FloorScore-certified (the single VOC certification accepted by both GBI and GreenRE). Many also have EPDs published. Recycled content disclosure available on request.
- We route installation through CIDB-registered partner contractors where the project requires that grade. Specify the minimum SCORE rating in your tender (G4-G7) and we will assign a partner that holds the rating. Government and healthcare projects with CIDB SCORE requirements are no problem.
- KKM Hospital Planning Norms 2023 (published April 2024 by KKM Engineering Services Division) sets functional requirements area-by-area. KKM does not name specific brands; tenders use reference products with "or approved equivalent".
Pricing & Lifecycle
- Material ranges roughly RM 8/sqft (entry heterogeneous) to RM 65/sqft (premium homogeneous with ESD). Supply-and-install adds RM 8-25/sqft depending on welding, coving, subfloor prep and access. Detailed pricing breakdowns by product type are available on each /products/ page and in the relevant specification guides.
- Heterogeneous vinyl 7-12 years in commercial use. Homogeneous vinyl with PUR finish 15-20 years with sand-and-buff refurbishment cycles. Sports vinyl (Taraflex etc.) 10-15 years.
- Manufacturer warranty 10-15 years on most premium ranges. Installation warranty 2-5 years from the contractor, depending on scope.
- Three line items often surprise specifiers: old floor removal, self-levelling compound, and skirting renewal/coving. Our quote breaks each out separately.
Sector-Specific
- Yes: ESD homogeneous vinyl (Tarkett iQ Toro SC, Gerflor Mipolam EL5 or equivalent) per EN 1081, with heat-welded seams and coved skirting, is the standard for KKM-compliant OTs.
- For competition: Taraflex Surface 6.7 or 7.0 (BWF Level 1). For recreational courts: Taraflex Sport M Performance or Tarkett Omnisports. All are BWF-approved sports vinyl.
- Yes when specified as FloorScore-certified low-VOC commercial vinyl. Smoother than tile, easier to clean than carpet, soft underfoot, no respirable VOCs.
- Public-area and non-clinical zones, yes, with phased installation and after-hours work. Operating theatres and ICU, no, the area must be decanted. Hotel renovations, yes, phased room by room.
Installation & Maintenance
- Typical hospital ward: 2-3 days per ward. Operating theatre: 2-3 days. Office (1,000 sqft): 2-3 days. Hotel room: 1.5 days each. Badminton court: 3-5 days.
- Heat welding is the process of seam-treating vinyl by grooving the seam, then filling with a heat-melted colour-matched PVC welding cord, creating a continuous surface. Standard for healthcare and wet zones.
- A vinyl skirting where the floor curves up the wall (using a cove former) instead of meeting at 90°. Eliminates the floor-wall joint for easier cleaning and infection control. Standard in clinical and wet zones.
- Daily damp mop with neutral pH cleaner. Weekly auto-scrubber on large floors. Annual buff/burnish for PUR-finished homogeneous. Stripping/re-sealing every 2-3 years for non-PUR ranges. Never use silicone polish on ESD or safety vinyl.
